Braunkohl gegen Heimat

Lignite against home

The lignite mine Garzweiler is an open pit mine of RWE Power AG in the Rhenish lignite mining district in North Rhine-Westphalia and was named after the village Garzweiler in the community Jüchen (Rhein-Kreis Neuss). The village of Garzweiler was dredged by lignite mining and is today – especially in the environment of the environmental movement – a synonym for the extraction of lignite in open-pit mining. The lignite mining Garzweiler requires the relocation of entire villages. Twelve villages and 7600 citizens are affected by the planned Garzweiler II.
